Swimming S’s

The first week of June was the beginning of the summer we love in AZ. Swim lessons are our favorite! We get to spend 4 days a week for 8 weeks at the pool where the heat is not only bearable but enjoyable. Both of the kids are doing great in their lessons this year. Soren is in level one and loves learning the basics. He can now swim by himself for a short distance (10 feet or so) but his new goggles have helped him learn to be comfortable under the water. He’ll spend all of his playtime in open swim practicing holding his breath and looking under water. IMG_2770

Svea is a real waterbaby. She LOVES the water and is doing amazing in her parent/child class. She can hold her breath and swim to the wall or another adult almost effortlessly. She also loves retrieving things from the bottom of the pool (3.5 ft deep). I have to give her a push to get her down to the bottom, but then she grabs the object, pulls her feet under her and pushes up to the surface by herself. She’s a lot of fun to watch but also a little stressful to swim with. She just started kicking off the wall to swim to me and I have to watch her EVERY second in the water.

I am finally feeling better but the kids have really helped me out the last few weeks. Soren gets up much earlier than I like to in the morning and he never needs me for anything. He gets a snack if necessary, changes out of his jammies and finds a show or game to entertain himself (turning the volume all the way down so he won’t disturb Mom or Sister who are still sleeping). The other day I found him like this:

MIA

Wondering where I've been for the last couple of months? Well, the truth is I've been way too tired to bother with my blog because I've been working on a big project...

and It's A Girl!

We're expecting a little one sometime in January and although the timing was a little unexpected we are feeling blessed to have a healthy start.

We went to our 12 week ultrasound today and I'm so excited to welcome this 3rd little child to our family. I can't get over the special feelings I get in those early ultrasounds. It's unbelievable that a baby can look like a baby at this stage! I love the little kiddo already. I'm still trying to figure out how she's going to fit in with this crew but I'm sure things will all work out for the best. Soren was disappointed he won't be getting a little brother but I'm sure that won't last. I'm sure Svea can't wait to mother the poor little babe.

Hopefully sometime soon I will get around to a nice juicy update. The kids have been busy!

Fathers and Sons 2011

The annual fathers and sons campout was held May 13th and 14th at Mingus Lake near Jerome Arizona. You can Google Map Mingus Lake, Arizona and pull up the aerial photograph. Mingus Lake is at elevation 7,000 feet and temperatures very a nice 49 degrees overnight. Mingus Lake is stocked with trout. The fishing report for Mingus Lake states that during very dry months, the lake level can get so low that it cannot sustain fish life. Its not like fly fishing in the high Uintas, or even the Middle Fork of the Ogden River, but we decided we would give it a shot. I bought my first fishing license in eight years and some cheap fishing rods at Walmart. Walmart also sells green worms that have florescent green blood – odd, but figured it would work.

We got out of Phoenix late. I wanted to be out by 2:00, but I was in charge of breakfast for the ward the next morning. This combined with a lunch obligation to by ex-Maricopa County coworkers, I was busy. We quickly set up camp. Soren rode in the car holding his fishing rod and was carrying the rod around camp showing everyone his “Model 202” fishing rod. He was pretty proud of it. He had been looking forward to fishing, so even though it was getting late we ran up to the lake before eating dinner. It took a little while to get the new fishing gear into the water. Had to tie all the knots, thread the line, cut the bait, and cast out. The wind was blowing toward us, so our bait could not stay deep enough for long. We walked to the other side of the lake and cast in. Within minutes, Soren hooked and landed his first catch, a 4-inch (that’s generous) cat fish. It was not the epic battle I wanted to film, and it was landed before I could get the camera out, but he was so happy with it. He was able to recognize that his bobber had been tugged under water and that he needed to reel fast. He wanted to run back to camp to share with everyone what he had caught.

Within 10-minutes I had my fist catch, I think it was the same fish that Soren had caught. Sorry for the pic quality, but I had to take it myself.

By this time it was dark and we went back to get dinner ready. A fire ban had been passed the previous morning, so we were only able to cook over a gas stove. We went all out with Italian sausage soup, but Soren refused to eat. He did not have one bite of dinner and did had no desert. He did go into his annual pre bedtime melt down. Ashley and I really thought he would have grown out of it this year “I miss mommy and Svea, I don’t want to sleep in a tent, I want to sleep in my own bed, I choose to go home, I don’t want to fish again.” Same drill as every year. Eventually he went to sleep. I didn’t know how the next morning would go, but when I woke up, Soren had his hand on my back and he said “Daddy, I am ready to try fishing again.”

After breakfast, which Soren refused to eat we went back to Mingus Mudhole to fish. We tried worms, but they were not hitting. The people around us were having some good success catching trout on power bait. Luckily, our Elders Quorum President, Tyler Angle was there and he had some power bait. We started using it and had some really good success. I think we caught 5 trout in about two hours of fishing. Most I would hook, and then get tired and pass the rod to Soren. He would reel it in. It was pretty funny, we caught 5, a priest in our ward, Jonathan Santos caught 3, and Tyler who supplied the bait caught nothing even though we were standing next to each other and casting to the same location. Soren was not bored at all, and attentively monitored his bobber the whole time. At the very end, he was more interested in practicing casting, but he did not want to leave. We made it back to camp, packed up and headed home.

(Notice in the 4th picture down, I am taking the hook out of one fish while Soren is reeling in another)

So – check fishing off on Soren’s list of new experiences. We will have to do it again. The problem is the Sentra does not hold much camping gear, making family camping difficult. Soren asked if we were going to go camping by the caves again. That was a trip that we took last September. Its nice that he has these memories of campouts and adventures that we have had together.

Stupendous Soren

Soren has shocked and surprised me this week. He is reading!

I was going through our books to weed out the books that Svea has destroyed when I found an old paperback science book that is probably Erik’s age. I was about to toss it into the donate pile when I realized it was a book for beginning readers. I’d been meaning to sit down and work on reading with Soren for a couple of weeks but we’ve been busy with guests and sickness and I hadn’t gotten to it. I sat down with him and opened up the book. To my total awe, Soren started reading this book he had never seen before. He still needs help with bigger words, but I’m amazed at how many sight words he has. Soren turned 4 last month. I’m so excited for him and I hope reading brings him the confidence and happiness that reading has brought me throughout my life.

Got to get back to the library to get some new reading material!

Here’s the proof. We’d never read these pages before this video.

April 25th Update

Once again, I am catching up. We stay busy enjoying the kids and trying to keep up with life!

Soren earned his “speedy car watch” by pooping in the potty for 7 days straight. This was the beginning (finally) of the end of potty training. He FINALLY did it and since he has been consistently accident free since this picture was taken on March 12, I think I can safely say we are DONE with that 2.5 year project.

Erik celebrated birthday number 34. The cake was sinful. German chocolate hybrid with flourless choco cake layer in the middle. Still gives me chocolate craving convulsions.

We had an early heat wave which made me want to get out of this crazy state

Luckily things cooled back down and I’m at peace with Arizona again. We’ve spend countless hours outside enjoying the spring weather.

Soren enjoyed an extended birthday celebration. Pre-Birthday weekend activities were Pizza at Barro’s, Falcon Field open house.
