Although we’ve been TEETHING…
We had a great Halloween weekend.
When we asked Soren what he wanted to be for Halloween this year (back in September) he didn’t even think before he replied, “A SUNFLOWER!” To keep things simple, we planned sunflower costumes for both of the kids, and I think they turned out better than I’d hoped.
We went to our ward Halloween party on Friday night. The kids were reluctant to wear their costumes all night, but did wear them for the costume parade and trick or treating. While we were shopping for a booth for the party earlier in the day we saw lots of really scary stuff at a party store. Soren was looking a little wide eyed, so I had a talk with him about why some people like to be scared or to be scary. Soren thought about this for awhile, then on our way to the car he told me, “Momma, I don’t want to be something scary, I want to be something nice. Like a sunflower!” Good thing I had a "nice" costume ready for him.
We decorated our real pumpkins on Saturday evening. Fresh pumpkins don’t last long in the desert! Soren wouldn’t touch the pumpkin guts, and Svea wouldn’t stop eating them.

We dressed the kids up on Sunday for a few webcamming sessions, then went out to trick or treat at a few houses. We didn’t have great luck with people giving out goodies, but the few houses we visited were very generous. Soren really understood Halloween this year and yelled “Trick or Treat” at every house and “Thank You” at a few houses (with some help from me). Svea had a little trouble walking in her costume and carrying her pumpkin full of goodies, but she had fun. She couldn’t believe people were actually giving her candy (she hasn’t had much sugar in her short life). Her purple pumpkin had to be pried out of her fingers when it got too heavy for her.
We hurried home to give out candy at home. We had around 100 trick or treaters this year. We let Soren and Svea eat as much candy as they wanted. Soren went CRAZY. He went unresponsive and spent a significant chunk of time staring at his fingers and climbing in his lego bucket. It was hilarious. Svea acted normal but wouldn’t go to sleep until after 10 - very unusual for my very (self) scheduled child.
It was a fun weekend. This week’s project has been a new sandbox in the backyard. This was a super budget job and the kids are really loving it. I’m looking forward to cooler weather so that we can really get some use out of the backyard. It was so hot today. Seriously Arizona, it is NOVEMBER! Time to cool down just a wee bit methinks.
