Sierra At Tahoe Jan 17th

I did not anticipate making a blog post today, but took a few videos that were too large to email, so posting them on the blog is the easiest.
The snow situation here is becoming dire.  This is the 3rd year of the big drought and mother nature has not offered any type of precipitation.  I was on Squaw Valley Website and they say average high in January is 36 and the average snowfall is 74” (123” in December).  Sierra At Tahoe had 80” in December and we have had nothing in January.  Worse is the average daily temperature has been 51 degrees.  15 degrees more than average and no snow.  Worse, there is no chance of snow in the 10 day forecast and temps will stay in the 50s.  We skied today, and will ski Monday, but then we might hang it up for awhile.  If additional snow does not come it is going to be really painful this summer, for the farmers here that rely on the runoff for irrigation.  If you can’t grow your hay, you can’t feed your livestock.  California water users are going to be in even bigger trouble.  It was mid 50s today and the snow was atrocious.  Like skiing through molasses and if you fell, you were soaking.  It was nasty.  We bought the kids a few pairs of high quality long johns for the ski season, and you don’t even need to wear them.  With just your jacket and a shirt you are too hot.

For some reason, the Cal-Berkley band was at Sierra At Tahoe.  They started playing at the top of the kids run, skied down and had a concert.  The kids were into it.  I was wondering why there was a bunch of Chinese kids in button up dress shirts skiing.  That explains it.  Liv enjoyed the stairway to heaven rendition.

I thought I had a good shot of Liv hitting the PCV Boxes, but Ashley was holding the camera sideways so the image is small, but its still funny.  Liv gets all kinds of comments going down the hill from people who watch her go fast, hit jumps, and live to tell about it.  She enjoys it.

I feel bad for Soren.  Ashley has to ride with one kid and I have to ride with the other, so when we ride the 2-person lift he always has to go by himself (can you tell how poor the snow is from the picture?).



We got up there around 9:30 which is early for us.  We got three runs in before it was time for lunch (11:30).  Liv fell asleep on the lift on the last run before lunch.  Doesn’t look too comfortable.  She also fell asleep on the last run of the day around 2:45.  We only got in 7 runs today, but still well worth it.  Season pass is the way to go!  Get up there late and you can leave early.  Nothing compelling you to stay 9-4 to get your money’s worth.
